Trama
Gandhi, � un Film made in United Kingdom, India, United States, South Africa di genere Biografico, L'impegno politico di Gandhi inizia in Sudafrica dopo che è stato cacciato dalla prima classe di un treno perché indiano. Il rifiuto di obbedire alle leggi inglesi si unisce alla scelta della non violenza. Finisce anche in prigione. Al suo ritorno in India viene accolto trionfalmente. Forte anche dell'amore della moglie, si accolla la missione di strappare i suoi connazionali al dominio inglese e diventa in breve il leader di un movimento indipendentista non violento a cui gli inglesi non sanno più come opporsi. Superati anche i contrasti fra indù e musulmani, Gandhi porta la sua gente alla vittoria finale prima di cadere vittima dell'intolleranza religiosa che divide i suoi connazionali.

Per realizzare questo kolossal sono occorsi circa vent'anni: nessuno era disposto a finanziarlo ritenendolo un progetto poco commerciale. Il suo straordinario successo internazionale (e la conquista di ben nove Oscar, tra cui film, regia e attore protagonista) ha dimostrato il contrario. Attenborough ricostruisce con meticolosità la vicenda politica di Gandhi, attento alla complessità storica e psicologica del personaggio.
